Incursion: 70's Express - A Sensory Adventure
INTERIOR DESIGN
When faced with a blank canvas, all you need to do is pick up a pencil, close your eyes, and let your hand flow freely, guided by your soul’s whispers. And just like that, beautiful things are born. This time, we’re not presenting a space that fits a specific pattern but one where textures, materials, and colors blend seamlessly into a bold, vibrant concept waiting to be explored and savored. When the clients presented the brief for this project—a short- and long-term rental apartment for guests traveling to Oradea, located near the city’s vibrant center—we immediately saw the opportunity to create something different. Situated in a modern complex surrounded by historic buildings, the apartment needed a distinct personality to stand out. Our concept focused on offering more than just a space—it’s an experience designed to evoke emotions. We aimed to combine striking visual aesthetics with the comfort of a true “home,” perhaps even more than that. The word that best describes this project, I believe, is color. Color isn’t just decoration; it’s a state of mind, a constantly evolving atmosphere, much like a living painting. The space transforms with the light of the day, the angles of view, and the changing seasons. This continuous interplay between light and color enriches daily life. It’s not about simply filling a space; it’s about creating a place that inspires us and reminds us that every day holds the potential to become a new adventure—a fresh play of colors, shapes, and textures. Through color, we can influence our mood every single day. This playful use of color subtly takes us back to a time when play itself guided our lives—when our main responsibility was to explore, to enjoy, and to immerse ourselves in the moment. The ambiance, completed with carefully chosen details, highlights relaxation and invites us to rediscover the joy of being free and expressing ourselves authentically.
Theme and Style The chosen style, called “70’s Express,” is an eclectic mix inspired by the stylistic elements of the ’70s to the ’90s. It brings together bold colors—deep green on walls and furniture, cheerful yellow in the main bedroom, rich blue in the second bedroom, and vibrant red accents—with rounded geometric motifs typical of the era. Decorative details, such as perforated brick at the entrance, lend a retro feel, while a modern touch is achieved through the use of contemporary textures. Sensory Experiences in the Rooms The yellow bedroom, with its lively and cheerful accents, invites play and exploration, radiating energy. In contrast, the blue bedroom offers a serene, tranquil atmosphere. The reflections in the surrounding mirrors create a sense of introspection, encouraging guests to connect with themselves. These two rooms are linked by a hallway adorned with IdenTRIology wallpaper (by Vladila), a central design feature symbolizing the search for authenticity and the projection of a future filled with possibilities. Every corner of this space invites dreaming and exploration, reminding us that home is not just a place—it’s a feeling. The details, from textures to accessories, were chosen to stimulate the senses, offering a balance between everyday comfort and the desire to escape into a more vibrant, lively universe.
Remarkable Design Elements At the entrance, perforated brick filters the light spectacularly, while the deep green accent at the corridor’s end creates a perfect visual balance. In the bathrooms, the ceramic finishes were carefully selected—hexagonal tiles with slightly rounded edges (Equipe Ceramics) add a touch of subtle elegance while maintaining a modern look. To balance contemporary modernity with the nostalgic charm of retro style, we avoided the heavy use of wood paneling typical of the ’70s. Instead, we integrated wood textures into the furniture, such as the kitchen countertop, base cabinets, and bedroom wardrobe.
Colors and Light for an Airy Space To create a bright, welcoming atmosphere, we chose neutral tones, such as warm white, for the walls, ceilings, and some furniture pieces. This choice helped balance the bold colors, allowing the space to breathe and offering a comfortable vibe suitable for both short- and long-term stays. Touches of Elegance Golden details—furniture handles, candle holders, and light fixtures—add a subtle refinement that perfectly complements the decor’s color palette. Lighting as a Key Element Lighting received special attention, ensuring the space is functional and comfortable at any time of day. Direct light sources like recessed spotlights and track lighting harmonize beautifully with ambient ones: table lamps, wall sconces, candles, and LED strips integrated into coves or furniture. These elements create a warm and relaxing atmosphere, ideal for guests seeking a welcoming retreat. One of the biggest challenges was finding a balance between modernity and the nostalgia of a bygone style. We carefully avoided the trap of creating a space that felt like “grandma’s house,” opting instead for a clean, airy design with balanced textures and lines. The result? An apartment that is both nostalgic and contemporary, offering guests a memorable experience that stays with them long after they leave.
